Hamburger Cupcakes!

Growing up, my mom always made the most creative, original, and fun birthday cakes for us kids...long before specialty cakes were all the rage. I have such amazing memories of doll cakes, puppy dog cakes (complete with one of mom's gold necklaces fashioned into a leash), and other such sweet creations. But, mostly I remember the time she spent and how special it made me feel to watch her labor away on something just for me. She poured both her love and her creative energy into each one. So, now that I have kiddos of my own, I love, love, love creating special treats for their birthdays. We've done a farmyard with barn & cows, a three-foot long killer whale (who knew one could use that much black frosting?!), and even Angry Birds cupcakes.

When I found these adorable "hamburger" cupcakes while perusing Pinterest, I knew that my oldest son (who turns 8 today) would love them. They make a great presentation when served with cookie strip fries, plus, they are super simple to make! Recipes and directions with tons of great pics are available from many sources including here, here, and here. I'll break down the basics.

Bake 1 batch of yellow cupcakes and 1 batch of chocolate cupcakes. (Due to time constraints, I opted for box cake mixes and homemade buttercream frosting.)
When completely cooled, slice the yellow cupcakes in half and trim the top edges to be the "bun".
Slice off the top of the chocolate cupcake to be the "hamburger patty". (This was the boys favorite part, since they delighted in eating the unused cupcake bottoms).
Now for your frosting. I love Martha Stewart's Basic Buttercream Frosting. The texture is always thick and creamy and it tastes delicious! One batch worked perfectly for 24 cupcake hamburgers. Divide the frosting in three bowls and color them red, green, and yellow respectively.
Now, get creative with your burger building. I opted to create the "lettuce" on the bottom layer so the frosting could help to hold the pieces together. I used a larger leaf tip on the icing bag to create the effect.
Stack the chocolate cupcake on the lettuce layer.
Using a basic round tip, swirl on your "ketchup" and "mustard" toppings.
Finally, top it off with the top yellow cupcake and you have an adorable mini hamburger cupcake!

Lost, But Not Forgotten

I can't believe how long it has been since my last post. Buying a Nursery Glider Online

Shopping for soft goods, such as gliders and ottomans online can be confusing, so always remember these tips:

1. Shop the Shape First
Soft goods are available in hundreds of fabrics, and if you don't like what the company offers, you can often use your own fabric. This is called Customers Own Material (COM). It is important that you find the line of the piece you want. That is why our images feature white chairs. Fabric choices are available for each chair once you select it. Do you like curves or straight lines? Do you want ruffles or a tailored skirt?

2. Know Your Dimensions
You may fall in love with a glider, but if it won't fit in the nursery, you may be stuck with it in the living room! Take precise measurements of the nursery. You may want to plot furniture placement on a piece of graph paper. Remember, you need room for your glider to move back and forth, so don't stick it right up against a wall.

3. Order Swatches
Once you have picked out your favorite shape and know that it will fit in your nursery, order swatches of your favorite fabrics. Pick a few that you are sure will be perfect, and take a chance on a couple that inspire you. You may be surprised at what works with your bedding. Check out the fabric against the bedding, the wall color and the flooring to be sure that you are happy with it.

4. Pick A Keeper

Wow. I can't believe it has been months since our last post. Time has completely flown by! In my defense, I have been working on my dissertation for my PhD. I started the process long before I decided to follow my dream of opening my own nursery design shoppe. So, even though my dreams have shifted to thoughts of all things baby I do think this is something I need to complete. Wish me luck!

Safe & Healthy Nursery Paint

As a University of Southern Mississippi grad, I was happily surprised to find that a new must-have product for the nursery came from my alma mater! Mythic Paint has been making waves in the home improvement industry and for good reason. Mythic is the only premium paint that is truly VOC free and non-toxic. Room to Grow

Baby nurseries are such a special place...which is why I have chosen to specialize in nursery decor. I just love helping parents-to-be design the perfect space for the newest member of the family. New babies bring hopes of the future and dreams of a perfect world...and to some degree the nursery represents that dream. We are creating a world as it should be.

Well, babies grow up. Its hard to imagine as a new mom that one day, your sweet angel will look at you and say "no". I know. It happened to me yesterday, when I told my 2 year old to have a seat. The realization hit me that Jack is growing up. He is, in fact, no longer a baby...but a toddler with his own ideas, thoughts and plans to take over the world. I will soon have to give over to the idea that we have to change his room from a nursery to a "big boy room".

Luckily manufacturers are hip to this idea as well and are offering big kid bedding to match their nursery lines. What Do You Love? Be Inspired.

Nurseries are such a special place to design. The design of a nursery is wrapped up in excitement, fun, and the anticipation of the little one who will call that room home. I feel like every nursery I design is a gift to a new baby and the family who will welcome him home. You may choose to hire a professional nursery designer, but you can achieve stunning results when you do it yourself. Designer nurseries can be had on any budget.

Start with you. What do you love about your home? What brings you joy? I try to style the room after the personalities of the parents, whether modern or traditional, elegant or funky and then add some touches just for baby. A baby's room does not have to have a "theme" or little fluffy bunnies to make it a nursery. It should be a sanctuary where you can bond with your baby as you rock her to sleep or play peek-a-boo on the floor. So make it a place you want to be. The reality is that you will be more impacted by the aesthetics of the nursery than baby will be!

For my own son's nursery, I wanted a vintage feel. I asked all the family members to provide a photo of themselves as babies. I had all the photos printed to 5 x 7 in black and white and framed them in distressed frames with large white mats. We hung the family photos in a collage style on the wall of his bedroom directly opposite the glider. Nightly reading time and late night feedings became an even more special time for me. Long after my son would fall asleep I could rock him quietly and look at each photo of the generations that had come before. I felt a wonderful connection with my extended family and it was nice to know that my son was surrounded by people who love him.

The Industrial Cottage

We spent last week at the Atlanta Gift Mart, which happens to house the largest international gift show ever! We were like kids in a candy store, with row after row of amazing designers and artisans. We are so excited about the fabulous diaper bags, lovely crib bedding and beautiful decor items we found. You can expect a lot of new inventory to arrive at Ashberry Baby over the next few months!

Today, I want to introduce you to an oh-so-talented bedding designer. Molly Tilman created her line, The Industrial Cottage just a couple of years ago to bring high quality baby bedding to the market. The fabrics are among the best we have ever seen in crib bedding and her eye for detail is apparent in each set.

This is the Tilden baby bedding set for your little Varsity athlete. A hand stitched argyle bumper is made of heavy weight twills in brown, white and deep red. Our favorite accessory is the throw pillow. Choose your son's initial to be top stitched on the brown twill. In the meantime, we are off to market...literally. The best and brightest in home decor, children's products and baby items are gathering in Atlanta for the summer gift show and we will be spending our week searching, shopping and uncovering the very best brands to bring to you.
